Gross revenue is not the same as retained revenue
A ₹4,000 booking through an OTA and a ₹4,000 direct booking share the same headline room rate, but not necessarily the same acquisition cost. OTA commissions, promotional contributions, payment fees and cancellation terms can all alter the result. Direct bookings may involve advertising, booking engine fees, staff time or loyalty benefits.
Keep tax treatment and package inclusions consistent when comparing channels. A fair comparison uses the same stay date, room type and occupancy conditions.
A simple contribution comparison
Imagine an illustrative ₹4,000 room-only sale before tax. The OTA booking has an 18% commission; a direct booking has ₹200 of attributable acquisition cost. These are hypothetical costs, not a statement about any specific platform agreement.
| Measure | OTA | Direct |
|---|---|---|
| Room revenue | ₹4,000 | ₹4,000 |
| Illustrative acquisition cost | ₹720 | ₹200 |
| Before property service costs | ₹3,280 | ₹3,800 |
The direct booking retains ₹520 more before room servicing costs in this example. But a direct booking that would never have happened without expensive advertising changes the comparison. Measure incremental demand, not only the headline fee.
Why OTAs still matter
Booking platforms can reach travellers who do not yet know your brand. They support discovery, cross-border demand and convenient comparison. The aim is not to abandon an OTA because it charges commission. It is to decide which channels bring useful incremental bookings, which dates they fill and whether their offers protect value.
Avoid discount stacking without visibility
A platform promotion, app-only deal, loyalty price and sponsored placement may each look modest in isolation. Their combined effect can be material. Audit the final guest rate, room revenue received, commission base and funded discount for each significant campaign. Avoid treating an advertised 10% offer as the only reduction in value.
Give each channel a job
- Track OTA, direct, travel-agent and corporate production separately.
- Review ADR, cancellation rate, lead time, length of stay and net acquisition cost.
- Use channel promotions to address specific dates or guest segments.
- Improve your own website, Google presence and guest trust so direct enquiries are easier.
- Do not compromise guest service to chase a particular channel mix.
Review profit contribution, not channel vanity
Channel strategy works when it connects distribution costs with demand, pricing and guest behaviour. A profitable booking from an OTA is valuable; an expensive direct booking is not automatically better. Every property has its own demand patterns and cost structure. A useful review starts with actual dates, booking pace, ADR and the revenue retained after distribution.
